Pakistan govt trying to curb media by introducing new Regulatory authority

Govt will merge individual functionality of PEMRA and Press Council into single Regulatory Authority

PAKISTAN- Pakistan government has trying to control media organizations by curbing the individual functionality of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) and the Press Council of Pakistan (PCP) as autonomous bodies.
“The government has decided to abolish PERMA and Press Council and merged them into a single entity called Pakistan Media Regulatory Authority (PMRA)”, said Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry in a press conference days earlier.
Justifying government’s move, Mr. Fawad Chaudhry said that the measure would help save national resources as the new regulatory body would look after electronic, print and social media simultaneously.
Independent media watchdogs and rights organizations, however, seeing this move as an attempt to directly control media and journalists.
