Within a two weeks’ time there are two journalists got murdered in Mexico. Mexican President –elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has called all the reporters without borders to protect the journalists in first place. The second journalist who got murdered is a local news website editor who works in Playa del Carmen from southeastern state of Quintana Roo and the first one is Ruben Pat. On 09th of July in Mexico City the magazine editor Luis Perez Garcia tracks the murder of the second journalist.
After getting life threats, Ruben Pat had requested to take any protection measures but he did not get any appropriate protective measures. In a café this morning the editor of the online weekly Semanario Playa News was shot 6 times and jose Guandalupe chan Dzib who is a weekly crime reporter was the target within a months’ time and the murder was happened in a bar which is an execution style murder.
Via Whatsapp Ruben Pat had received threats and from the Federal Mechanism for protecting journalists, he had asked for urgent protection. But unfortunately they have only given him a GPS and a panic button which is not enough at all.
After Chan’s murder RSF has contacted Pat for further details and he has complained for not taking appropriate protective measures. And said the threats were continuing. After hearing all these RSF have contacted the Federal Mechanism and asked to take all the necessary protection measures against Pat’s protection. But there was no such feedback for that request.
In June 2007 near the municipality of Solidaridad Pat was arrested. And threatened by the local police. After few days he was get to know the links in-between local officials and criminal gangs.
With all these it is a known fact that the Mexican authorities should pay more attention. It is sad to say that Federal Mechanism for protecting journalists is unable to do their job properly. They were unable to protect Ruben Pat even though they knew the situation for long time. This was said by the head of RSF’s Latin America desk Emmanual Colombie.
“We informed the responsible parties to speed up the process of identifying the criminals and leaders for this execution style murder and we are always there with the Semanario Playa News team.”
It is important to highlight that within two weeks’ time two journalists got killed.
Magazine editor Luis Perez Garcia who was in age of 79 was found dead in his Mexico City home on July 09th and was thought it happened due to a fire. His neighbors called firemen and found his body but it was not due to asphyxiation but he was killed. This murder was announce by the Mexico City general’s office.
To mislead the actual way of how the murder was done, the criminals hit Perez’s back side of the head and set fire to his apartment. So it will be hard to identify how it happens.
RFS strongly believe that there is a connection with Perez’s murder with his journalism. And the authorities say that the criminals should be identified and ensure that they will charge in front of the law soon. Perez was an experienced and a senior journalist who worked more than 30 years for a magazine called Encuesta de Hoy as an editor. Apart from that he was a member of Mexican association of Radio Hosts ( ANLM) too.
When going deep in the history of journalists who got killed in Mexico for this year, Perez and Pat are in the seventh and eighth in the list. Before that Héctor González Antonio, Juan Carlos Huerta, Leobardo Vázquez Atzin, Carlos Domínguez Rodríguez, José Guadalupe Chan Dzib and Pamela Montenegro were killed within a year of time.
With this latest murder cases it was emphasized there should be a way to protect the journalism in Mexico and Mexico is in the 147th place out of 180 countries listed in World press freedom index of RSF’s 2018. RSF released a statement to the next president on last month, evening of Mexico’s Election Day that he should take necessary steps to protect the journalists and journalism in the country and should be done without any delay.
