The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), PEN America, Reporters Without Borders, Amnesty International, family and friends of Shahidul are organizing the protest, supported by a number of human rights groups and journalist associations. Gayatri Chakravarti Spivak, prominent scholar and Columbia University professor will attend the event.
We will raise awareness about Shahidul’s continued imprisonment by the Government of Bangladesh, following his reporting of abuses against student protesters demanding road safety. Student protesters and other journalists also remain detained.
Please join to urge his immediate and unconditional release, along with the release of others similarly detained in Bangladesh.
This is a case of blatant violation of the basic human rights of Bangladeshis – freedom of speech, freedom of expression, and freedom of the press are all being trampled over with total impunity by the government.
We applaud Amnesty International for issuing an Urgent Action Appeal on12 September. On 13 August UN human rights Special Rapporteurs urged Bangladeshi authorities to immediately release Shahidul. Hundreds of people worldwide have signed petitions calling for his release including Nobel Laureates, academics and human rights organizations. Yet there is no positive response from the Bangladeshi Government.
We now plan to hold a demonstration during the United Nations General Assembly, where the Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed is expected to attend. We will gather near the UN building [Corner of E 47th st & 1st Avenue, NYC or use the dropped pin https://goo.gl/maps/q3LQ91gvKvx], We recently held several rallies as part of a Global Protest Week in Dhaka, London, New York, Washington DC and Atlanta, and need to maintain the pressure.
