China sentences political cartoonist to 6 years and 6 months in prison

On July 13th Chinese freelance political cartoonist Jiang Yefei was sentenced to prison for 6 years and 6 months.


July 26th 2018 – Hanoi –

On July 13th Chinese freelance political cartoonist Jiang Yefei was sentenced to prison for 6 years and 6 months. This was done on a Province court in Sichuan province. According to the U.S. congress funded radio free Asia and the Hong Kong free press which is an independent news website said due to a secret trial, national border crossing done illegally and Sabotaging the state power. The statement was made public today and the committee to protect journalists criticizes the verdict and pressed the Chinese authorities to bail out Jiang soon.

 

Giving a statement by CPJ deputy executive director Robert Mahoney from New York said trial in secret on trumped up done by Jiang Yefei is a fake.   By considering the whole incident, Chinese government feels scared about the cartoonists pen but it does not give any sense of moving him from his freedom for six and half years.

 

According to the CPJ research from 2008, Jiang faced harassments from Chinese authorities and he flew to Thailand in 2008. The reason behind the harassments is he used to criticize how the government handled the situation during the Sichuan earthquake.  Media reports more than 69,000 people were dead due to this natural disaster but it was questioned why earthquake prone region got damaged. While Jiang was in Thailand in October 2015 got arrested. It was due to that he helped a Chinese human rights activist to enter Thailand by breaking the immigration rules.  According to the CPJ’s reports Jiang was deported to his home country in mid- November.  CPJ research highlights that Jiang had dressed in prison cloths and say against the human smuggling and this was on Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.

According to the CPJ’s most recent prison statistics, China is in the second place of having second largest jailer of journalists.  On December 2017 there were 41 journalists were in.
