Bolivian radio journalist under house arrest, facing charges after covering protest

The committee to Protect journalists said today, Bolivian radio journalist was arrested by the Bolivian authorities on last week in the capital city of La Paz.

The committee to Protect journalists said today, Bolivian radio journalist was arrested by the Bolivian authorities on last week in the capital city of La Paz. He was covering a violent protest there in the city and CPJ is telling the Bolivian authorities to dismiss the charges against him.

Agustin Aldo Mamani is the reporter who went to cover the protest in the town Mecapaca from Radio del Valle station. Police has arrested him for four days and after that he is in house arrest now.  According to the news reports the charges against him is damaging the property.

While the discussion Franz Chavez who is the director of Bolivia’s National Press Association in La Paz had with CPJ Mecapaca residents who walked 15 miles to La Paz requesting the responsible authorities to lay concrete to the damaged roads. All those roads are connecting to the capital town. So Mamani was the journalist who covers this protest on August 29th

CPJ deputy executive director Robert Mahoney was telling recording a protest is not an offense while he was in New York City. According to his statement, Bolivian authorities should take immediate action to release him been house arrested and also said Agustin Aldo Mamani should be free from all the charges against him.

According to the news reports, 40 protesters got arrested with the journalist Mamani while they were throwing stones at a bus in La Paz.  This was said by the news reports.  Apart from this, Police has taken the video camera from Mamani and it is said that the journalist was standing more than 500m away from the damaged vehicle.

Mamani told that once the police have taken him he has told that I am a journalist and then they asked for identifications.  The mistake was I didn’t have it at that time and I tried to call my radio station but they never give me a chance.  This was said to the La Paz daily newspaper Pagina Siete.  After all they cuffed me and they treat me like a criminal.

Mimani was bailed out after 93 hours and police was telling he was holding the Cell at the Justice Ministry.  He got released after the press identifications was given by the lawyer said by Chavez. Mimani was considered that he was damaged to the property and the authorities have keeping them for house arrested for hours.

None of an official from the Bolivian attorney general’s office situated in La Paz did not comment on this case and the reason is the case is still under investigation. Apart from this on July 2015 another radio journalist called Juan Carlos Paco Vermendi was taken while he was covering a miner’s protest in La Paz. He was arrested for 5 days with no chargers.
